How Spades Works
Spades is a partnership trick-taking game where each player bids how many tricks they expect to win. The team must collectively meet their bid to score points. Spades are always trump, and bidding nil (zero tricks) is a high-risk, high-reward gamble worth 100 points if successful. Overtricks accumulate as "bags" and penalize your team every ten bags.
Quick Rules
- 1Each player is dealt 13 cards — spades are always trump
- 2Starting with the dealer, each player bids how many tricks they will take
- 3Players can bid nil (zero tricks) for a bonus 100 points if successful
- 4Teams score 10 points per bid trick plus 1 per overtrick (bag)
- 5Every 10 bags = -100 point penalty — manage your overtricks carefully
